The use of essential oils has been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians used oils, the Greeks and Romans of antiquity used oils, people from ancient India and China even used essential oils. So while you may think aromatherapy is something “new age”, the use is quite ancient.
Aromatherapy, or inhaling the aroma of essential oils can be done through using a diffuser, inhaling from the bottle, or my favorite way, by putting a drop in the palm of your hand , rubbing them together and holding your cupped hands over your nose for a few minutes.
So what does inhaling essential oils do? How can it benefit us? I’ll tell you briefly how they work. The authors of “The Essential Life” give a very detailed and easy to understand explanation. I want to use an abbreviated version of their description. They describe that when a person inhales an essential oil, the aroma from the molecule enters the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb communicates with the amygdala, hippocampus and other brain structures. The amygdala links our sense of smell to our emotions, the hippocampus is where memories are stored.
Did you ever wonder why the smell of something like cookies baking in the oven can bring you right back to your childhood? That smell is reaching your emotional center. That place where emotional memories are stored.
In my work, I am always working at that subconscious level. Aromatherapy is a great compliment in getting to those subconscious emotions. That is when the change or healing begins.
In my practice, as well as in my daily life, I use doTerra oils. Whenever I, or a family member have an ailment, skin condition or any other number of physical issues, the go to is doTerra oils. These oils are pure and go through a rigorous certification process. You can learn more about that here.
There are many ways to use these oils. I use them topically, most can be ingested and I take them orally, or I use them aromatically. I use these oils as natural household cleansers, as laundry detergent as well as skin care. These essential oils are truly a wonderful, all natural approach to a holistic lifestyle.
