I am always looking for research in the field of hypnosis. If you’ve talked to me about my work, you know my frustration with the inaccurate perception that many have about hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state that we all get into on our own pretty much daily. Most of us are just unaware that we are doing this or are unfamiliar with what hypnosis actually is. I can tell you that it is a lovely state of meditation. Meditation has been around for centuries, having been practiced by great spiritual leaders like Buddha and Jesus. The problem is that the media has people believing that it is something that doesn’t even resemble hypnosis. Sadly because of this, people who would truly benefit from hypnosis stay away from it. They avoid it at all costs. I can only hope that the good work that I do for people is enough to start breaking down those inaccurate notions and bringing to the conversation the powerful, life changing behaviors that hypnosis can bring about.
But I digress 🙂 I came across this article from the Mayo clinic dated December 2014. It’s titled “Alternative Cancer Treatments: 10 Options to Consider”. Wow, that piqued my interest! Low and behold, there it was…hypnosis being listed for multiple symptoms related to cancer. And as an aromatherapist, I was doubly surprised to see that there as well. You can find a link to the full article below, but I have to say that I am thrilled to have hypnosis recognized by Mayo Clinic. Not for any reason other than that I know it can help those suffering with a cancer diagnosis. Physically, patients have their surgeon, their primary care doctor, their oncologist. Who do they have to help reduce fear, deal with anxiety of testing and treatments? Who do they have to help with pain and sleep outside of medications? Cancer is a scary word, even when it is no longer in your life. People who have ever had this diagnosis live in constant fear. Will it come back? Loved ones worry about the same thing. This mental stress alone can be very taxing on one’s physical health.
Yes, I’m thrilled for the recognition because now I’m hopeful that those with cancer will reach out to receive the emotional treatment that hypnosis can offer. I’m also thrilled that science is able to study so much more than it has in the past. This is just the beginning for people being able to take control of their mental well being.
